Ali Alaawad has joined the Environmental Management Branch at OMAFRA as the interim Water Quantity / Irrigation Engineer. In this position, Ali is responsible to lead and/or contribute to the irrigation and drainage projects, drought response and mitigation plans & factsheets, Indigenous Engagements, and various external and internal partnerships. He began his role on April 08, 2024, and is based out of the Guelph office.
Most recently, Ali worked as a Nuclear Emergency Preparedness Team Lead with Emergency Management Ontario, Treasury Board Secretariate. In this role he led a multidisciplinary team developing provincial nuclear emergency preparedness plans, developing environmental surveys and sampling plans, engaging in national and international cooperative work and different working groups, and designing/leading multiple emergencies exercises.
Ali holds a bachelor’s in environmental engineering from the University of Guelph (2017), and Bachelor in Agricultural engineering from the University of Baghdad (2003).
Ali is professional engineer with Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO), and also holds Project Management Professional license (PMP®) from the Project Management Institute (PMI), Pennsylvania – USA.
Ali has a deep knowledge in environmental management and environmental emergency response. With over 15 years of experience, being involved in environmental and water large scale projects. Combining his knowledge of the Agri-food sector, the consulting sector and the emergency preparedness sector, Ali looks forward to working with multiple colleagues and partners.
