MAGISTER® miticide label expanded via Minor Use Program to help manage cyclamen mite on field-grown strawberries

The Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) recently announced the approval of a  minor use label expansion registration for MAGISTER^® miticide for control of cyclamen mite on field grown strawberries in Canada. MAGISTER^® miticide was already labeled for management of various mites on a wide range of crops in Canada. This minor use proposal was submitted by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Agribusiness, OMAFA, as a result of minor use priorities established by growers and extension personnel.

The following is provided as an abbreviated, general outline only. Users should be making insect management decisions within a robust integrated insect management program and should consult the complete label before using MAGISTER^® miticide.

TOXIC to aquatic organisms. Observe spray buffer zones specified under DIRECTIONS FOR USE. Toxic to bees. Bees may be exposed through direct spray, spray drift, and residues on leaves, pollen and nectar in flowering crops and weeds. Minimize spray drift to reduce harmful effects on bees in habitats close to the application site. Avoid applications when bees are foraging in the treatment area in ground cover containing blooming weeds. To further minimize exposure to pollinators, refer to the complete guidance “Protecting Pollinators during Pesticide Spraying – Best Management Practices” on the Health Canada website (www.canada.ca/pollinators). Follow crop specific directions for application timing. For applications on crops that are highly attractive to pollinators (outdoor ornamentals [except coniferous evergreens and ornamental grasses]; caneberry; bushberry; low growing berry [except strawberry]; pome fruits; stone fruits; vine climbing small fruit [except grape]) or when using managed bees for pollination services. Do not apply during the crop blooming period For applications on all other crops (except coniferous evergreens and ornamental grasses). Avoid application during the crop blooming period. If applications must be made during the crop blooming period, restrict applications to evening when most bees are not foraging. Toxic to certain beneficial arthropods (which may include predatory and parasitic insects, spiders, and mites). Minimize spray drift to reduce harmful effects on beneficial arthropods in habitats next to the application site such as hedgerows and woodland. Greenhouse use: Toxic to bees and other beneficial arthropods (which may include predatory and parasitic insects, spiders, and mites). May harm bees and other beneficial arthropods, including those used in greenhouse production. Avoid application when bees or other beneficial arthropods are in the treatment area. To reduce runoff from treated areas into aquatic habitats avoid application to areas with a moderate to steep slope, compacted soil, or clay. Avoid application when heavy rain is forecast. Contamination of aquatic areas as a result of runoff may be reduced by including a vegetative filter strip between the treated area and the edge of the water body.

Follow all other precautions, restrictions, and directions for use on the Magister^® miticide label carefully.
