There are several new fungicides and a new insecticide registered for use in grapes as well as some formulation and name changes in 2016. For more information please consult Publication 360 and pesticide labels.
New fungicides
Actinovate SP is a biological containing the bacterium Streptomyces lydicus. It is labeled for suppression of powdery mildew. It has protective activity and is susceptible to wash off so should not be applied when heavy rain is forecast. The Restricted Entry Interval (REI) is 1 hour and the Pre-Harvest Interval (PHI) is 0 days.
Aprovia is a new Group 7 fungicide (same group as Cantus, Sercadis, Pristine and Luna Tranquility) with protective activity against powdery mildew. It is locally systemic and translaminar (moves through the leaf), has an REI of 12 hours and PHI of 21 days. Do not apply back-to-back sprays of Group 7 fungicides. Do not use Group 7 fungicides more than twice per season.
Cueva is a new liquid formulation of copper that contains 10% copper octanoate (1.8% actual copper). The octanoate portion of the molecule is a fatty acid (soap) which improves the activity of copper against downy mildew and also provides good control of powdery mildew (better than other coppers). It can be tank mixed with all fungicides, insecticides and miticides. It has an REI of 4 hours and a PHI of 1 day. Cueva should not be tank mixed with lime or chelated or liquid fertilizers. Use caution if mixing with oils.
Double Nickel 55 is a biological product containing the bacterium, Bacillus amyloliquifaciens strain D747. It is a Group 44 but is not prone to resistance. It is registered for suppression of powdery mildew and Botrytis bunch rot. It can be tank mixed with all fungicides, insecticides and miticides. It should not be applied with silicon based spreaders. The REI is 4 hours (when dried) and it has a 0 day pHI. It will work best at pH 6-8. It does not require refrigeration but should be kept out of direct sunlight. It can be stored for 1 year.
Fracture contains an extract from sweet lupin seed. It is registered for suppression of powdery mildew and suppression of Botrytis bunch rot as a protectant. It has an REI of 4 hours (when dried) and a PHI of 0 days. Fracture requires two to four hours drying time on plant foliage for the active ingredient to absorb into the plant tissue before rain or irrigation occurs. If, during the next 12 hours it rains significantly, a new application will be needed during the next 4 days.
Fullback 125 SC is a Group 3 fungicide (same group as Inspire, Mettle and Nova). It is labeled for control of powdery mildew. It is locally systemic and translaminar (moves through the leaf), has an REI of 12 hours for general entry and 7 days for hand labour (training, thinning, leaf pulling) and a PHI of 14 days. Do not apply Group 3 fungicides in back-to-back sprays. Do not use Group 3 fungicides more than twice per season.
Inspire Super is a co-formulation of the active ingredients of Inspire (Group 3, same as Fullback, Mettle and Vangard (Group 9, same as Scala, Switch and Luna Tranquility). The solo products, Inspire and Vangard, will no longer be marketed but existing supplies can be used. Inspire Super is registered for control of powdery mildew, black rot, anthracnose and Botrytis bunch rot. It has a 7 day REI and PHI. When applying at volumes greater than 400 L/ha, a non-ionic surfactant should be added to the tank at 1 L/1000 L. Do not apply Group 3 fungicides in back-to-back sprays. Do not use Group 3 fungicides more than twice per season.
On V. labrusca, V. labrusca hybrids and other non-vinifera hybrids where sensitivity is not known the use of Inspire Super by itself or in a tank mixture with material that may increase uptake (adjuvants, foliar fertilizers) may result in leaf burning or other phytotoxic effect. Further empirical observations from Dr. Wayne Wilcox, Cornell University: Treated cultivars on which some injury from Inspire has been observed: Brianna, Canadice, Concord, Concord Seedless, Frontenac (minor), Glenora, Noiret (minor), Skujinsh 675 [interspecific hybrid containing V. vinifera, V. amurensis, V. labrusca, and V. riparia], St. Croix (minor), Thomcord (Thompson seedless x Concord). Treated cultivars on which NO injury from Inspire has been observed: All V. vinifera cultivars, Aurora, Baco Noir, Catawba, Cayuga White, Chambourcin, Chancellor, Chelois, Colobel , Corot Noir, DeChaunac, Delaware, Diamond, Elvira, Foch, Fredonia, Interlaken, Lemberger, Leon Millot, Niagara, Rougeon, Seyval Blanc, Steuben, Traminette, Vidal Blanc, Vignoles.
Kenja 400 SC is a Group 7 fungicide (same as Aprovia, Cantus, Sercadis, Luna Tranqulity, Pristine) for control of Botrytis bunch rot. It is locally systemic and has both post-infection and protectant activity. The REI is 12 hours and the PHI is 14 days. Do not apply back-to-back sprays of Group 7 fungicides. Do not use Group 7 fungicides more than twice per season.
Priwen has a novel mode of action and belongs to Group 5. It has protective and post-infection activity against powdery mildew. It is locally systemic and is rainfast when dry (4 hours). The REI is 12 hours for general hand labour and 17 days for activities such as leaf pulling or shoot positioning. Do not apply in back-to-back sprays. Rotate to another fungicide group and do not use more than twice per season.
Sercadis is a Group 7 (same as Aprovia, Cantus, Kenja, Luna Tranquility and Pristine) for control of powdery mildew. It is locally systemic and has a 12 hour REI and a 14 day PHI. Do not apply back-to-back sprays of Group 7 fungicides. Do not use Group 7 fungicides more than twice per season.
Timorex Gold is a biofungicide made from an extract of the tea tree plant. It is labeled for protective control of powdery mildew and suppression of downy mildew. It should be applied in slow drying conditions for best uptake of spray solution and product effectiveness. Timorex Gold is rainfast when dry on the plant surface. Do not spray when temperatures are above 35ºC. Good coverage and wetting of the foliage is required. Use enough spray solution to completely penetrate the leaf canopy and cover both the top and underside of all leaves until runoff. The REI is 4 hours and the PHI is 2 days. Timorex Gold is EcoCert approved.
Torrent 400 SC is a novel fungicide group (21) for control of downy mildew. It locally systemic and translaminar and has protectant activity against downy mildew. It is rainfast in 2 hours. It has an REI of 12 hours and a PHI of 30 days. Do not mix with a non-ionic surfactant. Do not apply in back-to-back sprays. Rotate to another fungicide group and do not use more than twice per season.
New Insecticides
Sivanto Prime is a new quick knock-down Group 4D insecticide that provides control of all leafhopper species and has a favourable safety profile for many beneficial insects. The risk of cross-resistance with other Group 4 insecticides (Admire, Assail, Closer, Clutch) is moderately low. However the Insecticide Resistance Action Committee recommends against using any Group 4 in succession unless there is no other alternative. Sivanto Prime is rainfast 1 hour after application.
Product name changes or restrictions
Forum (Group 40) is a new, liquid formulation downy mildew fungicide replacing Acrobat. Forum must be tank-mixed with an alternate mode of action downy mildew fungicide. For most activities, the REI is 12 hours with the exception of training, thinning and hand pruning (12 days). The PHI is 14 days. If you have any Acrobat remaining, you can continue to use it.
In response to possible growth distortion in wine and table grapes when one of the components of Luna Tranquility SC was applied at higher rates than the Canadian label recommends, Bayer CropScience is recommending that this product be used no more than twice and no later than shot berry (3 mm diameter) growth stage at 600 mL/ha. This rate will provide control of powdery mildew. The product label will remain unchanged until the full investigating procedure is complete.
Serenade OPTI is a new formulation of Serenade with 45% more of the active ingredient, Bacillus subtilis, than Serenade Max. The rate per ha has been reduced to match the change in concentration.
